A unique, beautiful location with ancient history is protected by Greek, European as well as international conventions, while Lake Mikri Prespa is protected by the Ramsar treaty as the only wetland. In 1991 the Prespa Protection Society was created with the help of WWF, which supported the efforts of the local population to showcase and protect the natural wealth of their region. Prespes has joined the NATURA 2000 network

The National Park, and in particular Mikri Prespa, is one of the most important international wetlands of Greece with the diversity and populations of breeding aquatic birds.

Birds: The Prespa wetland is a haven of unique & rare birds, a paradise for wild stomach observers, and two species of pelican are breeding in Prespa. Prespa hosts 2 species of pelicans, the world’s endangered Argyropelecanos and Rhodopelecanos. Lambs, Cormorants, Argyrotsikiniades, Coccitates, various ducks are only some of the species that you encounter in Prespa and are among the over 260 species of birds recorded in the area.

Activities : Prespa, apart from a unique habitat, is also a field suitable for sports and activities in nature, such as hiking, mountaineering, mountain biking, bird watching, boating and kayaking on the lake, 4X4 vehicle trips. In the village of Fishermen you can go boating while in summer you can enjoy swimming, canoeing, kayaking and rowing at Koula beach.
